Míšní degenerace typu Werdnig–Hoffman je choroba charakterizovaná atrofií (zmenšením, snížením či ztrátou funkce a odumíráním) specifických míšních struktur, spojená se svalovou ochablostí. Nejhůře postižené děti umírají záhy na nefunkčnost bránice. Příčinou je poškození genetické výbavy jedince. Dosud nebyla provedena rozsáhlejší studie, ale výsledky z několika různých pracovišť dokládají uvolnění svalových spasmů (křečí), analgetické působení a v důsledku toho možnost zahájení intenzivnější rehabilitace (zejména Vojtovou metodou). Psychický i motorický vývoj dětí se upravil na úroveň srovnatelnou s jejich zdravými vrstevníky.
